MOUNTING CANDLE WALL SCONCES

Mystery and Romance

A candle wall sconce is  a unique lighting source that truly rivals any other wall mounted light fixture.  It adds an aura or mystery and romance to any room or hallway, evoking images of castles and cathedrals.

From back in the days when fire and then eventually gas lamps were the only source of light, the candle holder wall sconce was touted for its ability to hold light to a fixed position on the wall. The oldest sconces can be dated to the  14th Century and the most modern versions of sconces still maintain the same basic features.

Today there are so many options for lighting rooms and hallways, choosing a candle wall sconce makes a statement both artistically and aesthetically. Styles vary from simple iron works to elaborate metalwork and blown glass.  They are often used not only to light a room, but also, when placed deliberately to light fine works of art.

Some designers are known to decide their placement based on the shadows that are cast by the specific mount. The placement of the mount is of utmost importance and the following factors need to be considered carefully:

1)   Height of the candle sconces for walls (both for safety and lighting)

2)   Number of sconces per wall (cluster type sconces are popular)

3)   Type of Candle (both for ease of replacement and lighting)

Once you decide the style and décor of the room you want to light, you must decide what type of sconce complements that best. Styles now range from homey ranch type holders that would work indoors or outdoors to grand large pieces that would rival the finest chandeliers of old.

Metals include iron and brass, there are crystal options as well as basic wood. Keep in mind that the area you want to light must be able to accommodate the style and size of the sconce you select. The larger the sconce the more sturdy the mount that is required.

Hanging the wall sconce is a simple procedure if two people are involved in the installation. It is possible to hang one alone, but this requires more effort. First locate the area you wish to light.

Second, measure the wall to insure proper placement. Mark the holes with a pencil prior to drilling. Make sure that there are studs available if you are hanging a heavy sconce, do not rely on anchors in dry wall for this project.

Consider the height that will be appropriate for lighting the room as well as showing off the art of the candle wall sconce itself. What furniture will sit nearest or under the mount? Will you have access to the unit to replace the candle easily? If you are using a cluster of candles, try using masking tape in “X’s” on the wall first. Put the “X” in the place of the candle and step back to make sure the pattern looks pleasing and is appropriately spaced.

Only drill starter holes that are smaller than the screws so that the main installation can be more easily done by a hand screwdriver; you want a snug fit.

Smaller candle wall sconces are hung as easily as a picture frame and many include mounts in the packaging that a single individual can use to mount the item in a matter of minutes.

The modern sconces make hanging easy, and the small amount of effort is well worth it as nothing rivals the look and feel of a room lit by candlelight.
