Many people have discovered the use of candle wall sconces for lighting their interior spaces.  The candles in the wall sconces gives off a romantic and subtle light that can create an ambiance of romance or cast artful shadows on otherwise empty walls.

There are many interior decorators currently consulting their clients to consider the shadow from these pieces as art itself on walls where a traditional painting or print would overwhelm a room.

But candle scones for the wall are not just for interior use. So long as one takes into account safety features and the correct number of light sources, these wall fixtures can add a unique and dramatic lighting to a patio or hallway area.

Be sure to mount these units on a sturdy wall where the weight of the unit and the candle can be bourn with ease.  Make sure that if you choose glass for the holder of the wall sconces candle, that you choose a thick glass with the lip of the glass coming higher than the candle itself.

Placement of an outdoor sconce is also important. There should be no shrubbery around or near the light fixture. This does not just mean that you should cut back bushes and tree branches. Because there are likely to be no other light sources nearby, you need to consider whether the candle you are purchasing will provide enough lighting for your needs.  If you intend to use the outdoor area as a “room” i.e. a patio or area where seating is available, you may need more light than if you are just lighting an exterior walkway.

You do not need to find one large candle to do all the work.  Many sconces are sold in groups intended to be hung in a generally close area to light a larger space.  But you do not have to limit yourself to one manufacturers intend to be sold together, be creative, mix and match different sconces.

A mix and match can be of similar materials, or even varying sconces all holding the same yet unique candles inside.  Outdoors it is easier to find spaces that will allow for a more charming hanging unit. These are made from iron, brass, glass and other materials sure to match any décor you desire to match.

Though less common than individual candle holders, there are options that hold several candles within the same wall sconce.  Keep in mind however that these require a wall mount capable of holding a heavier weight. Candles can be deceptively heavy.
